Introduction to the De’Longhi Dedica
The De’Longhi Dedica * is one of the most popular espresso machines on the market, especially for beginners and hobby baristas. With its slim and compact design, it fits perfectly into any kitchen. An outstanding feature of the De’Longhi Dedica is its Thermoblock heating system, which ensures a constant temperature for the perfect espresso extraction. In addition, the machine offers an adjustable steam wand with which milk can be frothed for cappuccino or latte macchiato.
With a current new price of about 150 €, the De’Longhi Dedica is also extremely affordable. Anyone considering other popular portafilter machines has to spend significantly more. For example, the Lelit Mara X costs about 1,200 €. And with brands like Bezzera, ECM, Rocket or Quick Mill, you can easily pay ten times the price.
It is of course bold to compare the De’Longhi Dedica with the portafilter machines from these other brands. After all, there must be differences between an entry-level and a professional machine. From PID controller to Faema E61 brew group to dual boiler, there are some arguments that justify the high prices.
In the past, I was often asked for a recommendation for an entry-level portafilter machine. And usually, the budget played a big role. If it was rather low, I recommended the Dedica, but with the note that you won’t get the optimum out of the coffee beans. Meanwhile, that’s different, because now I’ve found the 3 upgrades with which I can actually fully recommend this portafilter machine. However, under one condition: You own a coffee grinder that can grind espresso-fine.
Upgrade 1: A Better Tamper for the De’Longhi Dedica
The tamper is one of the most important tools in espresso preparation. An evenly and firmly tamped coffee ensures even extraction and thus a full-bodied espresso. Unfortunately, the De’Longhi Dedica comes standard with a plastic tamper that often doesn’t deliver the desired result. A high-quality tamper is therefore the first of the 3 upgrades for the De’Longhi Dedica that can significantly improve the quality of your espresso.
A good tamper should be heavy and well-balanced. The weight allows the coffee to be compressed evenly and with the right pressure. Tampers made of stainless steel or aluminum are ideal here, as they provide the necessary stability and durability. An ergonomic handle also ensures comfortable handling and precise control.
Of course, you can get the latest tech highlights here, but in my opinion, that’s not necessary. You don’t necessarily need a tamper station or a tamper with pressure adjustment. For starters, it’s completely sufficient if you simply have a heavier tamper and not a piece of plastic in your hand.
When buying a new tamper, however, you must make sure that the diameter fits the portafilter of the De’Longhi Dedica. Most tampers have a diameter of 51 mm, which is ideal for this machine. And here are a few tips for selecting and using a better tamper:
- Material choice: Stainless steel tampers are durable and provide the necessary weight for even compression.
- Ergonomic design: A tamper with a comfortable handle makes even tamping easier and reduces strain on the wrists.
- Fitting diameter: Make sure the tamper fits exactly into the portafilter to avoid uneven extraction.
Why a High-Quality Tamper is Important
The quality of the tamper plays a crucial role in preparing a perfect espresso. A high-quality tamper is more than just a simple tool – it is an essential instrument that can make the difference between a mediocre and an outstanding espresso. Proper tamping ensures that the coffee grounds are evenly compacted, optimizing the coffee extraction.
Evenly tamped coffee leads to even water distribution through the coffee bed. This prevents the water from forming channels and over-extracting or under-extracting certain areas. The result is an espresso with a balanced and full-bodied flavor, rich in aromas and without overly bitter notes.
If the coffee flows too quickly from the portafilter, this can be a sign of channeling. Under the proper pressure of 15 bar provided by the Dedica, the water naturally seeks the path of least resistance. So if you haven’t tamped evenly, the water forms a tunnel through which it passes quickly. Another clear sign that this has happened is dry spots in the coffee grounds. So if you remove the portafilter after brewing and discover dry coffee grounds, the water has probably found another path and hasn’t flowed evenly through the ground coffee. Time for a better tamper or better technique.

Upgrade 2: A Better Basket for the Portafilter of the De’Longhi Dedica
The basket in the portafilter plays – even if it doesn’t seem so – an extremely important role in espresso preparation. It holds the coffee grounds and allows the water to flow evenly through the coffee bed to extract all aromas optimally. A better basket is therefore the second of the 3 upgrades for the De’Longhi Dedica that can help you prepare a perfect espresso.
The standard baskets supplied are certainly acceptable for many users. They are double-walled baskets designed for pre-ground coffee. Of course, since most users probably don’t have a coffee grinder at home that can grind espresso-fine. These baskets have many holes when viewed from above, but only one hole when viewed from below. This allows more pressure to be built up. So even with old and possibly inferior coffee, we still get a crema and an acceptable-looking espresso.
Well, anyone who owns a professional machine and calls themselves a home barista would probably disagree with me, and I could understand that too. Because I wouldn’t feel like drinking an old and usually rather watery espresso either. But if you now have an espresso-fine grinding coffee grinder, you run into a problem at first: The portafilter clogs. Because with the double-walled basket, nothing comes out with espresso-fine ground coffee grounds. All three buttons on the machine flash several times at once, and you’re afraid to remove the portafilter because hot water will spray at you.
So you use a fairly coarse grind to still be able to brew espresso despite the double-walled basket. However, this means the espresso is not optimally extracted, and you miss the chance for a full-bodied espresso with special aromas. So you wouldn’t need to buy a good espresso grinder for that.
So What is the Solution for Good Espresso?
To be able to brew with the Dedica and a fine grind as required for espresso, you need a different basket. Namely, not a double-walled basket. There are various providers here, but you should make sure it has only one wall. When viewed from both above and below, you should be able to see many holes. And of course, you have to pay attention to the diameter here too.
If you’ve really gotten the urge to start as a home barista, then I even recommend a new portafilter. A bottomless portafilter can help you improve your skills. Because this way, you can see the holes of the basket well from below and observe the flow of the water or the espresso. This allows you to clearly see if you’ve tamped properly or if it’s spraying out on the sides, for example.
The Following Points Should Be Considered When Upgrading the Basket
- Material: High-quality baskets are made of stainless steel and are robust and durable. The material choice prevents corrosion and guarantees a long lifespan.
- Diameter and Hole Pattern: Precision baskets have an optimized hole pattern that ensures even distribution of water and prevents channeling.
- Compatibility: Make sure the basket fits exactly into the portafilter of the De’Longhi Dedica to ensure a tight seal and optimal performance.
Upgrade 3: Steam Wand Upgrade for Better Milk Foam with the De’Longhi Dedica
The quality of the milk foam is crucial for a successful cappuccino or latte macchiato. With a new steam wand for the De’Longhi Dedica, the milk foam can be significantly improved. High-quality steam wand sets often offer finer steam distribution and more precise control, leading to creamier and more even foam. This is especially important if you want to achieve professional results that approach the quality of a barista.
What Does Upgrading the Steam Wand Bring to the De’Longhi Dedica?
Upgrading the steam wand can bring several advantages. On the one hand, the steam output is often improved, leading to faster frothing. On the other hand, high-quality steam wand sets enable better control over the steam amount and intensity. This is particularly useful if you use different types of milk or plant-based alternatives, which have different requirements for steam supply. In addition, a new steam wand can increase the longevity of the machine, as it is often made of robust materials.
Changing the Steam Wand on the De’Longhi Dedica
Changing the steam wand on the De’Longhi Dedica is usually straightforward and can be done with a few steps. Nevertheless, you should take enough time and have the one or other tool at hand. Of course, the machine should also be turned off and cooled down. Then the old steam wand is carefully unscrewed and replaced by the new model. Make sure that all seals are properly seated to avoid steam leaks. After the change, it is recommended to rinse the machine briefly with water to ensure everything works correctly. With the new steam wand, nothing stands in the way of perfect milk foam.
Bonus Tip: The Espresso Scale – Precise Weighing for Perfect Coffee
An often underestimated but extremely important tool in espresso preparation is the espresso scale. Precise weighing of the coffee beans and the espresso is crucial to achieve consistent and perfect results. This makes the espresso scale the third of the 3 upgrades for the De’Longhi Dedica that can significantly improve your coffee enjoyment.
Using an espresso scale allows you to measure the exact amount of coffee grounds and water, which is crucial for the reproducibility and quality of the espresso. For me, the following three reasons are decisive why an espresso scale is indispensable:
- Accuracy: A precise scale measures the coffee grounds and the extraction amount exactly, leading to a more consistent flavor.
- Consistency: By weighing accurately, you can ensure that every cup of espresso tastes equally good, regardless of whether you use 18 or 20 grams of coffee.
- Optimal Extraction: The right amount of coffee grounds and water ensures that the coffee is not over- or under-extracted, leading to a balanced and aromatic espresso.
When buying an espresso scale, you should consider the following points:
- Precision: Make sure the scale can measure accurately to 0.1 grams to determine the exact amount of coffee grounds.
- Tare Function: This function allows you to subtract the weight of the container or the portafilter, so you only measure the weight of the coffee grounds or water.
- Timer: Some scales have an integrated timer that helps monitor the exact brewing time during extraction.

Why the Espresso Scale is So Important
Proper use of an espresso scale not only improves the quality of your espresso but also your barista skills. If you’ve never worked with an espresso scale before, these tips can help you:
- Weigh the coffee beans before grinding to ensure you use the exact amount.
- Use the tare function to subtract the weight of the portafilter or container.
- Monitor the extraction time with the integrated timer or a separate stopwatch.
- Note the results to be able to revert to the same parameters in future preparations.
If you now know how much coffee has ended up in your cup and how much coffee grounds you used for it, you can calculate the so-called brew ratio. Assuming you used 12 grams of coffee and there are 30 ml of liquid in your cup, then you have a brew ratio of 1:2.5. Only if you measure these parameters can you approach your favorite flavor with small adjustments (grind, amount, and time).
An espresso scale is therefore actually an ideal tool for anyone striving for perfection in their espresso preparation. Through precise control over the coffee amount and extraction time, you can ensure that every espresso achieves the best possible quality. This upgrade is an essential step to take the De’Longhi Dedica to the next level and enjoy the perfect espresso.
